Probe in Shillong Jailbreak case

SHILLONG: The Judicial Inquiry Commission probing into the sensational Shillong jailbreak got another extension of four months from the State Government.
The Commission would now have to complete the probe process and submit its report to the government by July 17. The tenure of the Commission had ended on March 17 last.
Meanwhile, the Shillong Bench of the Gauhati High Court on Thursday heard arguments relating to the case on whether the Commission should examine more witnesses before starting the arguments on the findings.
Plaintiff Agnes Kharshiing argued in her submission before the Court on Thursday that there is a contradiction regarding the details about the clothes of the jailbreak mastermind Fullmoon Dhar.
While questioning the statement submitted by the Commission that Fullmoon’s clothes were eaten by insect, Kharshiing said that it cannot be true since when the body was exhumed for the second time his clothes were found in a plastic bag.
She also wanted to know how small insect could eat the clothes alone and not the body.
It may be mentioned that the Government had constituted the Inquiry Commission on July 23, 2009.
The Commission was constituted after seven under trial prisoners (UTPs) lodged at the Shillong District Jail escaped in the wee hours of May 31, 2009.
The alleged mastermind of the jailbreak, Fullmoon Dhar, was later killed in an encounter in Jaintia Hills as claimed by the police while the rest of the UTPs were re-arrested.
