NONGPOH: A teenager – identified as Banshan Mukhim — was electrocuted while he was playing badminton with his friends at Nongthymmai, near Byrnihat on Monday.

According to sources, in the course of playing, the shuttlecock fell on the roof top of a house of one Ting Lamin. Banshan (11) climbed up the house to collect the shuttlecock but to due to extreme proximity of the live wire to the roof top Banshan got electrocuted.

A witness alleged that they immediately called up the emergency number (landline) of MeCEL, Byrnihat to shut down the power supply but there was no response for 30 minutes. By the time MeCEL shut down the power supply Banshan had already lost his battle of life.

It is learnt that the owner of the house, Ting Lamin had submitted several petitions to the MeCEL authority for altering the route of the live wire from his house, but his petitions had fallen on deaf ears of the authority concerned.

Meanwhile, FKJGP’s Byrnihat Circle, while condemning the incident demanded adequate compensation to the parents of the deceased.
