New Delhi: Actress Yami Gautam, who is playing the role of a Bengali girl in her debut film Vicky Donor, says she watched Konkona Sen Sharma’s films to prepare for her character. The 25-year-old actress, who is a Punjabi girl from Chandigarh, says director Shoojit Sircar wanted her to refer to Bengali actresses to prepare for the role.

“It was a different role as I am a Punjabi girl and I had to play a Bengali character. I don’t have any Bengali friends but Shoojit sir helped me prepare for the role. He made me watch films starring Konkona and other Bengali actresses to understand their body language – the spunk and the attitude very typical of Bengali girls,” Yami told PTI.

The actress was previously seen in TV shows Chand Ke Paar Chalo and Yeh Pyaar Na Hoga Kam. She also appeared in a number of advertisements before bagging the lead role in Vicky Donor.

“Getting into films was not a cakewalk. I stopped doing TV because I was not happy with my roles. Then I started doing advertisements and was noticed. The casting director of Vicky Donor approached me after spotting me in one of the ads and I auditioned for the part. I had to undergo a number of screen tests and was then finalised to play Ashima,” she said.

The film also stars VJ-turned-actor Ayushmann Khurrana and Yami said that the actor is an introvert in real life contrary to his on-screen image.

“Me and Ayushmann have a wonderful chemistry in the film as we knew each other and we both hail from Chandigarh. On-screen he may have this naughty image but off-screen he is an introvert. There were no pranks played on the set but we had a lot of fun shooting the film,” she said.

“It is a very commercial film but has been given a realistic treatment. The film has got an U/A certificate and that proves that it is fun and entertaining,” she said.

Bollywood hunk John Abraham has turned producer with this film and Yami said that he never interfered while shooting and let Shoojit do his work.

“John used to drop by at the sets. He is one of the most reserved producer I have ever seen,” she said. (PTI)
