SHILLONG: A Khasi village in Assam’s Karbi Anglong District will celebrate its golden jubilee on May 3. The village named Kalibhity serves as a model of unity for the neighbouring states of Assam and Meghalaya who have been involved in several border disputes of late.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Karbi Anglong District Khasi Students Union (KADKSU) adviser Pius Sten said that the Khasi village located in East Karbi Anglong invited Khasi leaders from Shillong to take part in the golden jubilee cerebrations which will have cultural programmes besides addresses from various Khasi leaders from Meghalaya and Assam.
“We also plan to invite Union Minister of State of Water Resources Vincent H Pala and former Chief Minister DD Lapang,” Sten said.
The village was formed in May 3, 1962 and at present there are 200 households in the vicinity.
Kalibhity village Rangbah Shnong, Goldstarwell Tyrngai said that through this celebration, they want to make the State leaders aware of the large Khasi presence’ in Karbi Anglong, Assam.
While maintaining that the development carried out by the Assam Government to uplift the Khasi village is not up to the mark, he also informed that they have submitted several petitions to the Assam Government but there has been no positive response yet.
The Karbi Anglong district is one of the Autonomous hill district of Assam constituted under the provision of Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India. As such the pattern of administration is somewhat different from that of the plains district of the state of Assam.
