Champions Dempo finish campaign in style

Kolkata: Already assured of the title for a record fifth time, Dempo Sports Club from Goa finished their I-league campaign in style by defeating Prayag United Sporting 3-0 in their last fixture at Yuba Bharati Krirangan here on Saturday.

Displaying fine opportunism and overall superiority, Dempo pumped in two goals in the first half through striker Ranty Martins and skipper Climax Lawrence while substitute Koko Sabiko completed the tally in the 82nd minute to take revenge of their first-leg defeat earlier this year.

Prayag United had defeated Dempo 2-1 in the first leg in Goa.

Though the result of this match would not have any bearing on their I-League title, the Goans started confidently and looked serious from the beginning.

They surged ahead in the 18th minute when following a Clifford Miranda cross from the right Kato chipped the ball in front of Martins who made no mistake to find the target with an angular shot (1-0).

Inspired by the lead, the visitors kept up the pressure and scored again in the 31st minute.

Forward Eusuke Kato again set the ball for Climax off a Ranty Martins through pass and Climax made it 2-0.

With Saturday’s goal, Dempo striker Ranty Martins emerged as the highest scorer in this year’s I-League with a tally of 32 goals.

Dempo completed this year’s I-League with 54 points from 26 matches.

Dempo coach Armando Colaco praised his players for their performance throughout the league.

“Though we are already assured of our title , I am very happy that my team finish the league fixture one a winning note,” he said.

finish eighth

Sporting clube de Goa ended their league engagement on high, whipping HAL 7-0 to finish eighth in the I-League, played at Nehru Stadium in Margao on Saturday.

Sporting who led 3-0 at half time scored through Dawson Fernandes(9th, 82nd), James Moga(20th, 51st), Joseph Pereira(41st), Kalu Ogba(49th),substitute Victorina Fernandes(61st) and finished their league engagement with 40 points from 26 matches and placed at the 8th position.

HAL relegated into the second division of the I-League finished last with 8 points from as many matches.In a one sided match, Sporting played entertaining game and dictated terms in the midfield throughout. (PTI)
