Mukul claims he was misquoted

 SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has clarified that the State Government is not mandated by the Constitution to modify any directives which has been issued by the Election Commission (EC).

Referring to a report in The Shillong Times under the caption All party panel to end enrolment stalemate (May 9), Dr Sangma said that he had been misquoted in his statement that ‘the State Government does not always have to abide by the directive of the EC as mandated and can always modify such directives if there are apprehension in the State’.

“The State Government is bound by law to abide by the directives of the Election Commission in this connection,” the Chief Minister added.

Meanwhile, he said that the all-party meeting held on Tuesday had resolved constitution of a all-party committee which would examine the guidelines of the EC in so far as it relates to a strategy and modalities of the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation action plan for maximization of enrollment is concerned keeping in mind the constitutional position and ground realities.

“A suitable representation will then be submitted to the EC for its consideration and direction,” Dr Sangma said.
