Three school teachers among four held for rape

SHILLONG: Three school teachers in West Khasi Hills and a person who deals in religious items were arrested by police on Thursday afternoon in connection with the rape of a woman at Mawlai Phudmuri here recently.

Among the four arrested, two of them identified as Avenson Warjri and Remon Marwein, both teachers of St. Claret Higher Secondary School, West Khasi Hills were the main culprits while the two others identified as Robestar Langrin, also from St. Claret and Dominic Basaiawmoit, a dealer in religious items, were arrested for their involvement in the crime.

The four were arrested from Madan Heh in Mawlai Phudmuri on Thursday afternoon. Sources informed that two of the accused, Basaiawmoit and Warjri are permanent residents of Mawlai while the other two hail from West Khasi Hills.

The woman (22 yrs) was raped by Warjri and Marwein at Langrin’s house at Mawlai Phudmuri, who is a temporary resident of the area.

Sources informed that the victim, who was a friend of Basaiawmoit, had wanted to meet him at Mawlai Umshingiar. Basaiawmoit, however, sent his friends – Warjri and Marwein – who took her to Langrin’s house for drinks after which they raped her.

Following their arrest, the culprits during their interrogation maintained that the girl was in an inebriated state and she had consented to the act.

However, medical reports of the victim taken earlier had indicated that the victim had not consumed alcohol.

The four accused will be presented in the court on Friday.
