TURA: Two hardcore militants of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) involved in several criminal activities surrendered to West Garo Hills police with arms and ammunition on Friday.

The two militants gave themselves up to authorities with a .32 pistol and nine bullets and three Chinese hand grenades at Dalu police station.

The miltiants have identified themselves as Elvin M Sangma aka Oldng and Rikseng D Sangma aka Moga and both are locals of Dalu region.

The militants were attached to Nangalbibra command of the GNLA under area commander Rakkam Sangma after their passing out of armed training from the 3rd batch of recruit members of the outfit.

“They underwent training at Mandalgre camp of the GNLA across Simsang river near Williamnagar,” police said.

The militants are believed to have been unhappy with the functioning of the outfit command and blame the senior leaders of the command for failing to look into their interests.

“They have revealed that the senior leaders use to enjoy a life of luxury collecting huge sums of money while the juniors are given just the bare requirements amounting to a few hundred rupees each month leading to widespread unhappiness,” claim West Garo Hills police personnel who interrogated the two members of the outfit.

The two militants are said to be involved in several anti-social activities ranging from serving extortion notices, attack on security forces and attempt to abduct civilians.

An attack on shops at Dangsa Awe during GNLA bandh this year, in which the militants set fire to business establishments which opened shop during the closure notice involved the two surrendered militants, it was revealed by police.

Also, both militants were part of a group of the Nangalbibra command which had a close encounter with SWAT commandos of the Meghalaya police at Maidugittim area of South Garo Hills wherein one GNLA militant was shot dead.
