Shillong: The Dorbar Shnong of Mawlai Mawiong- Mawiong Rim and Mawiong Umjapung have lend their support to the suggestions made by the Khasi Jaintia Butcher’s Welfare Association (KJBWA) who have urged the Government to reconsider its decision on setting up the abattoir at Mawiong.

Agreeing with the observations of the five members of the Association who visited some slaughter houses in the country during a tour arranged by the State Veterinary Department in January, the two Dorbar Shnong stated that the government should weigh the pros and cons before going ahead with the construction.

“After reports stated by the association, we are convinced that placing the abattoir at Mawiong will have an adverse impact on the health of the people and we will continue to oppose construction of the abattoir at Mawiong”, Mawiong Rim Rangbah Shnong SS Lyngdoh said.

The KJBWA after its tour had stated that slaughtering meat inside the abattoir is worse and unhealthier than the usual practice.

Five members of the KJBWA, who had visited slaughter houses in Chennai in January, filed a report thereafter stating that the way in which the meat was slaughtered was unhealthy given the filthy surroundings and many butchers preferred slaughtering the meat outside the house.

In their findings, the Association’s members have rated the practice of slaughtering meat in the city to be far better than the way it was done in the abattoir in Chennai.

The KJBWA had also apprised the Director of Veterinary Department of their findings in March and are still waiting his reply.

Meanwhile, the association has asked the state government to think twice before spending crores of rupees in setting up the abattoir at Mawiong even as they urged the government to designate more places for slaughtering of meat in the East Khasi Hills District.
