JOWAI: The Jaintia hills District Administration on Tuesday imposed Section 144 CrPC prohibiting assembly of more than four persons at one place within 100 metre radius of Kiang Nangbah Government College campus. The order also prohibited carrying of arms, lethal weapons and obstruction of students, lecturers from attending classes.

The District Magistrate in-charge, B. Mawlong informed that the order was issued with a view to maintain law and order in and around the College.

“This has been done to avoid causing inconvenience to students, lecturers and staff of the Kiang Nangbah Government College,” he said.

It may be mentioned that the Kiang Nangbah Government College Students Union (KNGCSU) had resorted to agitation in order to pressurise the government to remove the Principal of the College.

KNGCSU general secretary, Dapoi Laloo had said that the Union has registered their protest against the Principal as the student community is left anguished with the latter’s insensitive judgement in regards to admissions in the institute.

Laloo claimed that the Union had received various complaints from students to which the Principal gave no response.

The KNGCSU also alleged that the College has failed to return the caution money collected from students annually.

Meanwhile, according to sources, students of the College are divided on the issue with some for and others against the Principal. On the other hand, both teaching and non teaching staff were also in favour of the Principal.

KNGC ex- general secretary, Kitbok Lamin and former culture secretary Pynkynmoo John Stevenson Lamare said, majority of the students did not support the agitation.

Education Secretary JSU, E. Bareh said, “Their (KNGCSU) agitation has no ground and all allegations against the Principal are baseless”. The JSU also urged the KNGCSU to withdraw their agitation.
