Shillong: With an intent to provide a lasting solution to the problem of sewage disposal in the city, the State Government is contemplating a Rs 300-crore project for construction of sewerage plants for removing of contaminants from wastewater and household sewage, both runoff (effluents) and domestic.
Informing that the government has sought the assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in funding the project, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the government is planning to implement the project within Shillong urban conglomeration.
Ampareen informed that in the first phase a total of six sewage plants would be set up in areas falling under the Shillong Municipality.
“Out of the total Rs 250 crore which has been proposed for the project, the ADB has assured to fund Rs 150 crore,” she said while adding that the remaining Rs 100 crore would be funded by the Centre under JNNURM-II.
She also informed that the process for identification of locations for setting up of the sewage plants has already begun.
“The sewage pipes will be passing through all the areas and would be connected to the main utility duct where all the waste would be collected,” she said.
Admitting that there might be opposition to the project, she said that the government has already decided to set up the sewage stations on lands owned by the government.
“We are hoping that the project would take off very soon,” she added.
