Agartala: The first monsoon shower has thrown life in Agartala out the usual orbit over the past 24 hours, even as the meteorological department forecast heavy rains in the next 24 hours too.
A woman died and 14 others, including 11 children, were injured in various places of Tripura since yesterday when lightning struck them during the thundershowers across the state. All the injured children were undergoing treatment in Shantirbazar hospital in South Tripura. Three others were shifted to the Agartala Government Medical College and Hospital.
Kuijarani Das (38), resident of Melaghar, West Tripura, died in front of her house when struck by lightning yesterday afternoon.
Three of the injured were from outskirts of Agartala and 11 children were from Shantirbazar. Lightning struck them during prayer in the school campus yesterday.
Most of the low-lying areas around the capital were inundated and the entire city was waterlogged, disrupting the communication network. All the major sewerage drains overflowed and inundated roads, shops and houses.
Crops and electric lines suffered moderate damage due to incessant rain in several parts of the state. Power supply in and around the state was upset.
According to met officials, Tripura has recorded more than 200 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours with Agartala city alone receiving 93 mm rainfall.
The met officials stated that the south-west monsoon has been active in the Northeast since yesterday, after almost 10 days of it’s formal onset in eastern India.
The rains would continue at least for another two days in Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and isolated parts of Assam.
The torrential rain has changed day temperature a little over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura; fell over Meghalaya and fell markedly over Manipur during the last 24 hours, resulting in cool feeling over the region. (UNI)
