Shillong: With an aim to promote indigenous music and artists of the region, the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), Dimapur will organise the North East Music Festival 2012 in the convocation Hall, NEHU on Thursday.

The music festival, jointly organised by the State Arts and Culture department will witness performances by folk fusion bands from all over the north east along with the local favourites, Shillong Chamber Choir (SSC).

Governor RS Mooshahary will be the chief guest on the occasion. Bollywood actors Konkana Sen and Rahul Bose will also be present in the musical event.

According to NEZCC programme officer Oliver Temsu Pongen, the concert will provide a platform to the upcoming indigenous artists of the region who are experimenting with indigenous instruments.

Meanwhile, expressing concern over the lack of interest shown by the youth towards folk music, SCC’s mentor Neil Nongkynrih said “Nowadays, youth are apt in modern music and show more interest towards the western music”.

On folk fusion music Nongkynrih said, “Anything that comes from folk tradition is always interesting. People should get exposed to their own tradition with a different flavour.”
