Shillong: Even as the day of reckoning draws closer, Purno A Sangma seems determined to win the battle to Raisina Hill at all costs.

Sources close to the Trinamool Congress have informed that there are strong indications that Mamata Banerjee could support Sangma. The sources say that Sangma on his part has assured Mamata that the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Meghalaya and the North East would merge with the TMC.

When NCP leader in Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, was asked if this is a fact, he said, “I am not aware of such a deal.”

Conrad who is in Delhi said, “We are very busy with the paper work as Mr Sangma is filing his nomination tomorrow (Thursday). Since this is an election we have to be prepared for all eventualities.”

Meghalaya is heading for the polls next year and with PA Sangma having resigned from the NCP the party will remain rudderless without him. Sangma had earlier aligned with Mamata’s Trinamool but returned to the NCP later.

It remains to be seen what happens to this maverick politician after the results of the Presidential polls are announced.

But the question is whether Sangma will still be able to carry the people of Garo Hills along with him.
