Gurgaon: A one-and-half-year-old boy today fell into a 20-feet deep pit at Chukma village here, but was quickly rescued, averting another Mahi-like incident here.

The child, identified as Sachin, slipped into the pit late in the evening at an area near Palam Vihar on the outskirts of Delhi. “Sachin was playing near our house. He suddenly fell into the pit at around 7.30 PM. We sought help of our neighbours first…,” the child’s mother Pooja said.

The child’s parents, working as labourers, reside in the area where the incident took place. Within about an hour, Sachin was pulled out by the fire brigade personnel helped by local agencies, police and public.

The uncovered pit was dug by the Electricity department for earthing work and erecting poles at the village. The incident comes a week after rescuers pulled out the body of four-year-old Mahi on June 24 from a 70-feet-deep borewell near Manesar where she was trapped for four days. Sachin, who was rushed to a nearby hospital, is fine, rescuers said.

Doctor Suresh Kadiyen, who examined Sachin at Civil Hospital, told PTI that the child was hale and hearty. “There was no injury marks on the child’s body,” he said.

Taking the matter seriously, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has asked the state Chief Secretary to convene a meeting tomorrow on disaster management where the issue of illegal borewells will also be taken up.

Besides a rescue team, fire, medical and police personnel had joined the rescue operation. Oxygen was supplied through a pipe to the child, CMO Parveen Garg said. (PTI)
