SHILLONG: The UDP Parliamentary Party (PP) is scheduled to meet on Monday to take a final call on the candidate of their choice for the July 19 Presidential election.

“The Parliamentary Party would take a final call on Monday to decide on whom the party should support for the President’s post,” party sources informed here on Sunday, even as there are indications that the party is most likely to support former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma since he hails from the State.

Both Purno Sangma and Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma have sent letters to UDP president Dr Donkupar Roy seeking the party’s support. Dr Mukul has sought support for UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee.

UDP president Dr Donkupar Roy has already extended his support to Purno, saying, “It would be a proud moment for the State if Purno Sangma becomes the President.”

However, the UDP president had also pointed out that his party was yet to take a final call on the matter, even as he had expressed hope that his party leaders would share his views over Sangma’s candidature.

NCP prayer meet across State

The NCP Shillong unit held a prayer meeting at the party headquarter on Sunday invoking God’s blessings for PA Sangma who will be contesting the Presidential elections on July 19. The prayer meeting was attended by many people from non political background and different religious denominations. Rev PBM Basawiamoit was the main celebrant apart from many others who took part in leading the prayer in English and Khasi. Prayer meetings were also held in Tura, Jowai, Mawkyrwat and Byrnihat.
