Curfew relaxed in Kalain for two hrs

Silchar: Curfew was relaxed for two hours this morning at Kalain town in Cachar district of Assam where 22 persons got injured on Wednesday in clashes between members of two communities.

Police said curfew in the town was relaxed between 8 am to 10 am and the situation was now returning to normal. Some of the people were seriously injured in Wednesday’s clashes have been shifted to the Silchar Medical College.

The Hailakandi district administration imposed prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC throughout the district to maintain peace and prevent any untoward incidents.

Earlier, prohibitory orders had been imposed in pockets under the Lala, Algapur and Hailakandi police station areas of the district. Now it was expanded throughout the district.

Cachar and Karimganj districts have been under section 144 CrPC for past few days. No reports of any violence were reported so far from any part of the Barak Valley.

Violence broke out on Wednesday at some places in the valley during a bandh call by the Hindu Jagran Manch and supported by the BJP, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Hindu Milan Manch, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and some other outfits.

The ‘bandh’ had been called against alleged harassment of innocent people in the name of search operations to arrest those responsible for the assault on Congress MLA Rumi Nath and her second husband Jacky Zakir last Friday at a hotel in Karimganj.

The ‘bandh’ supporters demanded action against Nath for bigamy. (PTI)
