NONGPOH: In a desperate move to cover up his heinous crime of raping a helpless woman, some well wishers of Umklai Rangbah Shnong Himrose Syngkli allegedly attempted to bribe the victim by offering her a hefty amount of Rs 1 lakh.

Informing this here on Sunday, KSU’s North Khasi Hills general secretary Vincent Makri said when the woman refused to accept the money the group threatened her with dire consequences if she does not withdraw the case against Syngkli.

Syngkli on Thursday afternoon allegedly raped the woman on the premises of Ramky Company in Umklai Village, about ten kilometers from Nongpoh.

Meanwhile, members of several NGOs met on Sunday here at Mawroh to discuss the issue. The meeting appealed the law enforcing agency to give exemplary punishment to Syngkli besides demanding adequate security for the victim.
