Nongpoh: While the general public showed rare discipline and waited their turn to cross the area where an unprecedented landslide at 19 Mile near Nongpoh had claimed three lives, an army convoy of five heavy vehicles and a bus led by a senior officer ( Lt Col) bulldozed their way through the jam and misbehaved with Superintendent of Police Ri Bhoi District, Claudia Lyngwa. “There was a tragedy at hand and we were trying to clear the road. The public showed discipline out of respect for the tragic incident and also because they did not want to worsen the situation. But this army convoy did not have the decency to wait its turn. Is this the discipline of the army?” said an agitated Lyngwa who had been handling the situation since Wednesday when the landslide happened.

Members of the public who watched the scene were appalled by the behaviour of the army officer. While the officer got into an altercation with the SP Ri Bhoi, his jawans moved menacingly towards the police officer.

The matter was resolved after the Deputy Commissioner Akash Deep Singh exerted his authority on the arrogant army official.

Media persons who present at the scene were witnesses to this clash between the police and the army personnel.

Frequent travellers along the Shillong-Guwahati road see this sort of army high-handedness all the time.
