Guwahati: An on-duty magistrate and his driver, on Wednesday were attacked and injured by inmates of a relief camp in communal violence-hit Kokrajhar district of Assam when the officer had gone to distribute relief materials at the camp.
Magistrate Bipul Saikia later accused the district administration of failing to provide security cover to him and leaving him to face public wrath over alleged inadequate security and essential commodities at relief camps.
Mr Saikia came under attack at a relief camp this morning when he arrived at the spot in his vehicle, with cartons of relief materials.
‘The mob tried to pull me down but I managed to evade them. They attacked us and we somehow managed to escape,’ the magistrate told reporters at Kokrajhar after the incident.
‘I am myself a part of the administration. Whom do I blame for this now?’ he questioned.
He also alleged that the Kokrajhar deputy commissioner had also faced public wrath at the same relief camp before him and had fled the scene halfway.
The driver said the mob was armed with daggers, rods and sticks.
Communal violence in Kokrajhar and its adjoining areas has claimed 41 lives since July 20 with curfew and shoot-at-sight orders still clamped in several areas. (UNI)
