Imphal: A statue of Nobel laureate and Manipur’s pro-democracy icon Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will be unveiled on Tuesday at Moreh, the border town in the state’s Chandel district bordering Myanmar.
According to the Solidarity Committee for Burma Democracy (SCBD), the organiser of the event, the ceremony will be held to commemorate the 24th Anniversary of 8888 uprising.
The statue, sculpted by renowned artist Soubam Nimai, will be unveiled at the Social Science Studies Centre, Irawat Road, Moreh.
The 8888 uprising started by students in Yangon (Rangoon) on August 8, 1988, ended on September 18, after a bloody military coup by the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC).
Aung San Suu Kyi emerged as a national icon and her party, the National League for Democracy, won 80 per cent of the seats in the parliament (392 out of 447) in 1990.
After the crackdown by the military junta following the Aug 8, 1988 and after subsequent events, elected members and members of the NLD had fled Burma (Myanmar) and took refuge in Manipur.
