Apropos the News Caption that appeared in The Shillong Times on August 7 relating to Scholarship of Rs.5,000/- to students in Higher Secondary Level, the office of the CM has clarified that Dr. Mukul Sangma has been wrongly quoted.

In the clarification, the office informed that Chief Minister Dr.Mukul Sangma had mentioned about a two year Diploma course in Elementary Education which provides a monthly scholarship of Rs. 5,000/-. The primary objective of the Diploma Course is that under the Right to Education (RTE) it is mandatory that all school teachers should be trained. Accordingly, the Chief Minister has directed the Education Department through the Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT) to conduct the course.

The Diploma will not only facilitate quality education for trained teachers but also encourage the youths of the state to take up teaching as a profession and also help to create a pool of trained teachers in the State.

The qualification required for admission to the course is Class-XII passed or its equivalent with at least 50% marks (relaxation of 5 marks to SC/ST/OBC/PH). The application will be received at the respective DIETs in every District.

The Chief Minister, therefore urged upon the youths to take advantage of this new programme.
