Shillong: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), the umbrella organization of different students’ unions of the North Eastern States has appealed to the Centre and the respective state governments for immediate and effective measures for mental, physical and social security for the people of the NE region residing in different parts of the country.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, NESO stated that it is a matter of serious concern that in the last few days, there have been frequent unwanted incidents of killing, assault and threat to the people of the NE region in different parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

“We demands intervention of Dr Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde for ensuring proper security for the NE people,” NESO said while adding that the situation has become so serious that students as well as others earning their livelihood in these states are fleeing back home.

“This has forcibly resulted in a feeling of discrimination and alienation among people of the NE region,” the NESO statement said.

“Being a representative from the Northeast, and in the capacity of Prime Minister, Dr Singh is morally duty bound and accountable to the people of the region for an immediate effective action regarding this situation, giving justice to the people of the Northeastern region,” NESO said.

The organisation informed that they have send letters to the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra on Thursday seeking their intervention in the matter.

NESO also demanded a high-level enquiry into the ongoing incidents and to give exemplary punishments to the perpetrators.

NESO also appealed to the Chief Ministers of the Northeastern states to take collective and serious actions for forcing the Union Government and the concerned state governments to ensure security of the NE people.
