Shillong: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has written to chief ministers of all the eight Northeastern states to consider the feasibility of deputing a delegation from their respective states to the South Indian states in view of the mass exodus of students and people from the North East fearing rumours of imminent attacks on them.

Dr Sangma also emphasized on a joint visit to the South Indian states, saying that such a visit will have a far greater impact in dousing the situation.

The State Government has already sought permission from the Ministry of Home Affairs to facilitate a tour of a government delegation from the State to different Southern states in the wake of mass exodus of students belonging to the Northeastern region to their respective home states.

Dr Sangma has also dispatched letters to the chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry (Pondicherry) and Tamil Nadu, in which he spoke of the anxiety and apprehension among those living in those states as well as their parents and families back home in the wake of rumour mongering by mischievous elements to create a state of panic and disorder.

The letters also requested the governments of the Southern states to issue stern warning to all such elements who are seeking to create disturbance by spreading false rumours.

Dr Sangma also appealed to South Indian states to issue clear directives to the field formations to keep a close watch so that students from the North East region are not harassed or victimised in any manner.
