SHILLONG: The State government has appealed to the students and workers to return for their respective studies and work places in Maharashtra and Karnataka as the situation in both the states has normalised.

“We appeal to the students, especially, to return to their respective colleges and universities in Karnataka and Maharastra for their studies as the situation has normalised in these two states,” Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said on Wednesday.

Ms Lyngdoh was apart of the State delegation which visited Karnataka and Maharashtra on a goodwill mission in the aftermath of rumour- fuelled exodus of the northeasterners from those states.

The group comprising Ampareen Lyngdoh, Energy, Transport and Information Minister A T Mondal, GAD minister AL Hek met Maharashtra home minister RR Patil during its visit.

Mondal said the state governments of Maharashtra and Karnataka had assured the delegation of providing full security to the people of North East living there.

“Home Minister of Maharashtra told us that no body will be allowed to create nuisance in his state,” Mondal said.

The delegation also expressed satisfaction over the steps taken by the Maharashtra and Karnataka governments to ensure security to the people of the Northeast.

The delegation also met the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka R Ashoka and students and working community living in that state.

Moreover, Mondal said the Muslim community held Iftar and Eid parties with the people from the Northeast to strengthen relationship.

Similarly, Karnataka was also doing all that is required for building up a sense of security for the people from the northeast, he said.

The GAD minister AL Hek said that students and working community in Bangalore have urged the delegation to build Meghalaya House in Karnataka. “The matter will be taken up with the Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma and if need be Meghalaya Government will ask for a plot of land from Karnataka government,” he said. It may be mentioned that the approximately 6 lakh people from the North-East live in Karnataka.
