SHILLONG: With an attempt to bring governance closer to people of the State, Transport Minister AT Mondal on Friday launched the website for online registration of vehicles and payment of road taxes at the Information Technology Building Conference hall here.
Under the new system, procedures related to vehicle registration such as entry of vehicle detail, owner’s detail, online payment of registration fee and payment of road taxes etc., will be done by the dealer through the net-banking facility with the State Bank of India (SBI).
The system can be accessed online at meghalayaonline.gov.in where a link will be provided to a secure portal https://vahan.meg.nic.in of the Transport department.
Under the online system, an e-receipt will be generated by the system along with Form 20 (for vehicle registration) once a new buyer applies for registration certificate. The car dealer will then hand over the Form 20, the e-receipt and the sale letter from the company to the owner following which the latter will remit the amount required for the registration to the concerned dealer.
Dedicating the online service to the people of the State, Mondal said this portal is a citizen-centric service which aims to facilitate services of the Transport department, adding that the portal could also be used to access all the details of vehicles which in turn may deter vehicle thefts.
The new initiative is expected to reduce the sufferings of people who have to wait for hours at the DTO to process their registration papers.
The Transport Minister also appealed to the car dealers in the city to make use of the online service to speed up and improve efficiency in the matter of registration of new vehicles and payment of road taxes.
