SHILLONG: The State Government has finally come out in admittance of irregularities in the implementation of NREGS in the State, with Community and Rural Development Minister Saleng M Sangma revealing in the Assembly that there are a number of officials including Block Development Officers (BDOs) and Gram Sevaks who are allegedly involved in siphoning off funds from the scheme.

“There are numerous cases where BDOs and Gram Sevaks were found to be involved in the misappropriation of funds. We have taken action against those officers who were involved in these illegal activities,” Sangma said while replying to a supplementary question raised by Opposition Leader Conrad K Sangma during Question Hour in the Assembly on Friday.

The Minister, however, did not give out any details on the identity of the officials involved in the misappropriation of funds.

Sangma also informed that the C&RD department has received a total number of 13 complaints alleging irregularities in the implementation of the Centrally-sponsored scheme, while an additional 93 complaints were registered in various district of the State during 2011-12.

“Out of the 93 cases, 70 cases have been disposed off while the remaining cases are at different stages of investigation,” he said.
