SHILLONG: Lack of hostel facilities in many of the city’s educational institutions has contributed to its downfall as the preferred educational destination of the region, said Chief Secretary WMS Pariat after formally inaugurating the women’s hostel of Shillong College here on Saturday.
“With several educational institutions unable to provide hostel facilities to students from outside, the latter are compelled compelled to seek admission in other parts of the country and even abroad,” Pariat said addressing the gathering.
Pointing out that education has become very expensive Pariat said that it becomes extremely difficult for the students to pay house rents besides the education fees in order to pursue their studies in the city.
The Chief Secretary though informed that the State Government is coming up with new initiatives in order to restore the ‘lost glory’ of the city.
‘Besides, introducing various new technologies which have emerged in the field of education, we are also improving the infrastructure so as to better the facilities in the education sector,” Pariat informed.
Meanwhile, the Chief Secretary also said that the inauguration of the women’s hostel at Shillong College would greatly benefit the girl students of the institutions.
The college had received financial assistance of Rs 80 lakh from Union Grants Commission (UGC) in 2008 for construction of the hostel which would accommodate 40 students.
