SHILLONG: The Megha-laya Medical Service Association (MMSA) will resort to a 24-hour ceasework in the entire Garo Hills region on Thursday from 9 AM in protest against the alleged humiliation and detention of Doctor-in-charge of Chokpot PHC, Dr WN Sangma by the police.

The MMSA has also decided to write to the Government giving a deadline till Friday to take action against the erring police personnel, failing which, they would resort to a state wide strike from Monday.

Though the police alleged that the doctor was in an inebriated condition and acted arrogantly, the MMSA said that the doctor may have taken a peg or two, but it was not during his duty hours and added that he was not creating any nuisance.

The police also claimed that the doctor had apologized for the mistake.

According to MMSA general secretary Dr. Aman War, what irked them was that after the hands of the doctor were tied with a rope, he was taken to Chokpot Police station in full public view by the police after he was detained on Wednesday evening.

Dr War said the doctor had only asked the constables from the second MLP battalion who were coming in a vehicle not to use the road inside the PHC.

The doctor was also annoyed after a sign board which restricted parking of vehicle inside Chokpot PHC was removed by the police constables.

According to Dr War, though the doctor was released by the police after detaining him on Wednesday evening, he was again taken for medical examination at night which according to MMSA is a criminal act since he was not in police custody.

With the doctors planning a strike, a magisterial inquiry to be headed by additional district magistrate AM Sangma was ordered by South Garo Hills district administration.

The report will be submitted within 15 days.
