Natl child panel seeks report from State Govt

 SHILLONG: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights on Wednesday sought a report from the State government on alleged rape and molestation by Rev SK Miller of New Life Ministry.

Acting on complaints received from several local NGOs on the issue, the commission has sought a detailed report from the East Khasi Hills district administration on the matter.

When contacted, member of the Commission, Dr Yogesh Dube told The Shillong Times that the Commission was apprised of the matter by the social organizations of the state who have also sought an immediate intervention of the commission.

“For the past few days, we have been receiving complaints and reports on this serious issue and taking a strong cognizance on this serious matter, we have sought a report from the state government today (Wednesday) itself”, Dr Dube said.

On the other hand, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) on Tuesday assured that the victims (four boys and four girls) would be allowed to continue their study.

The CWC heard the case of these children who were rescued on September 29 by police along with Civil Society Women Organization (CSWO) and Child line from New Life Home at Nongrimmaw, Laitumkhrah here run by Miller.

All the children appeared before the CWC on Tuesday whereby it was decided that the children would at present be staying in a shelter home. The four boys were taken to Rilang Shelter Home, which is a government registered shelter home whereas the girls were taken to Ferrando Transit Shelter Home at Mawlai.

Meanwhile, police has collected all the books and belongings of the children from Miller’s house on Tuesday night following the direction of the committee.

East Khasi Hills SP, M Kharkrang informed that Miller who was arrested on September 28 was booked in two cases – rape (under section 376 IPC) and child labour.

Kharkrang, however, Miller could not be produced before the court since he was admitted to a hospital on the day he was arrested.

Rev Miller was shifted to NEIGRIHMS on Tuesday after his health condition deteriorated.
