SHILLONG: Majority of the party supporters who had accompanied West Khasi Hills District Congress Committee (WKHDCC) president Boldness L Nongum to MPCC chief DD Lapang’s residence on Tuesday night have expressed surprise over the denial of Lapang on his earlier statement that he had been offered huge sums of money by ticket aspirants from Ri-Bhoi district.

A party supporter, on condition of anonymity, on Friday said everyone who was present at the meeting had heard this statement of the MPCC chief.

Recalling the statement made by Lapang, the supporter said that the MPCC chief had categorically stated that he was offered an amount of Rs 10 to 20 crore by the ticket aspirants from Ri-Bhoi district.

“He (Lapang) went on to say that even if he was offered Rs 100 crore he would refuse to accept it,” the supporter added.

The party supporter further observed that there are possibilities that the MPCC chief had made such remarks without the knowledge that media persons were present outside his residence at that time.

Meanwhile, a senior journalist, who was present at the meeting, said the MPCC chief was lucky since there was no one from the electronic media present at that time.

“He (Lapang) would not have been able to deny his statement if he was caught in the camera,” the journalist added.

The MPCC, had, on Thursday come out with a statement that the comments of the MPCC president that he was offered huge amount of money for allotment of party ticket was misinterpreted by the media.
