SHILLONG: A display of creative arts by the children from Nursery to Class V of May Queen School at Mawlai Nongpdeng on Saturday only highlighted the fact that children are creative powerhouses and new ideas can be brought about if their talent can be harboured.

From drawings, paintings to cutting and pasting of wrappers, the children of May Queen School did it all, exposing their inward creativity, interest in the subject, understanding of a concept and the like and put it up for display to the gathering.

‘I wanted to bring out the creativity of the children and it is up to us to channelize their creativity through various means. This exhibition is not something which is being prepared by the parents and is put for display giving whole credit to the child but it is being done by the students themselves in schools with the help and guidance of the teachers”, principal of the school Dr S Nongkhlaw said.

Upholding that exhibitions are educational activities which could broaden the understanding of a child, Dr Nongkhlaw said, “We have to understand that not all children have the same IQ, some of them are good at sports, art, music, etc. and it is our duty as teachers to bring out that talent of a child.”

She mentioned that the children got one week to prepare their exhibition in the school adding that the children worked so hard and it would be right to appreciate it as their own work rather than giving credit for something they didn’t do.

“By doing this, a child will understand the value of its work and would enjoy the credit which in turn will boost their morale and confidence.”

Started in 2006 by Dr Nongkhlaw and her late husband, Lt Col R Kharmujai, the school attempts to impart quality education to the backward families of the society and has grown since then from only a handful of students in 2006 to over 200 at present.

Keeping up with the trend in education, the school which has been extended till class V at present has introduced ‘Smart Class’ from nursery till Class V and hopes to introduce music classes as well.
