SHILLONG: The Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Conrad Sangma, has alleged that large scale extortion drive is being carried out by different militant groups in many areas of Garo Hills including Bajengdoba.

“GNLA, ANVC (B), LAEF and other militant groups are engaging in extortions in various parts of Garo Hills. Moreover, there are several organizations which collect money from the traders,” Sangma alleged.

“These groups are extorting anything between Rs 15000 to Rs 50000,” Sangma said while adding that people are suffering tremendously from these extortion drives.

The Opposition leader also came down heavily on the State Government for its failure to address this issue.

“Innocent people should not be harmed and harassed at any cost,” Sangma added.
