SHILLONG: The NPP on Monday exuded confidence that the party legislators would not face any disqualification.

Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope on Wednesday sent the complaint lodged by NCP State president Sanbor Shullai to the eleven legislators who had defected to the NPP from NCP.

Reacting to this, the NPP national president PA Sangma on Thursday told reporters that there was no ground for disqualification of the legislators.

Sangma reiterated that since two-thirds of the NCP legislators in Meghalaya had merged with NPP, there is no room for their disqualification.

“The argument that NCP is a national party and the merger or split should take place at the national level would not be applicable to the State Legislature as the rule is clear that the Parliament cannot decide on matters related to state legislature,” Sangma said.

The Leader of Opposition Conrad Sangma added that since seven legislators are out of station, the party would seek extension of time for replying to the comments sought by the Speaker.

Conrad also said that the party would also submit the official papers related to the merger to the Assembly Speaker shortly.
