SHILLONG: Mawkhar Rangbah Shnong and former Additional Advocate General (AAG) of Meghalaya, WHD Syngkon, on Friday suggested legalizing of the sex trade and production of illicit liquor in the State to reduce instances of crime.

“I do not think there is anything in wrong in legalizing the sex trade. The fact is that legalizing the sex trade would help to reduce the number of criminal activities to a large extent,” Syngkon said while speaking during an interaction of the traditional heads and the police on Friday as part of the ‘Safe-Secure-Shillong’ project launched recently by the State Government.

While pointing out that sex trade is very much a reality in the State, he said the police are facing lots of difficulties to tackle this issue since things are being done in a hidden way.

“Once it is legalized, everything would fall in place. The fact is that many women have landed up in the flesh trade profession out of compulsion. None of them took up this profession by choice,” the Syngkon said.

Syngkon also spoke in favour of legalizing the illicit liquor produced in the State, saying that the Government is losing a huge amount of money by not legalizing this trade.

“Everyone is aware that majority of the people who cannot afford to have Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) are dependent on illicit liquor. The Government would earn huge revenue by legalizing sale of illicit liquor,” he said.

Claiming that he was the one who had moved the Government to legalize archery gambling (teer) in the State, Syngkon said that presently the State is earning huge revenue after legalization archery (teer) gambling.
