Army Public School lift football trophy

SHILLONG: Army Public School, Shillong, lifted the East Zone CBSE Cluster 1 (Under-19 Boys) Football Championship 2012 by defeating Assam Rifles Public School, Shillong, 4-3 in a tie-breaker in the final, which was held at the Sports Authority of India Football Ground in Guwahati on Saturday.

Over 30 CBSE schools from various parts of the North East participated in the tournament, which was held from November 20-24.

Enroute to the final, APS Shillong pulled off some giant-killing feats by beating APS Narangi 4-0, Srimanta Shanardev Academy, Guwahati, by two goals to nil and St Xavier School Krishnai, Goalpara, 1-0.

They then faced off against VKV Doyong, Nagaland, in the semifinal and won that clash 3-0.

The APS Shillong football team will now travel to DAV Panipat to play for the top honours in the CBSE National Games, which will be held from December 12-17.

It may be mentioned that the school football team reached the quarterfinals at the National Level of the same tournament last year in Chennai.

The team members were: Surya Bahadur Thapa (class XII), Nitesh Chheri (XII), Chandra Bahadur Ale (XII), Sheigoulen Khongsai (XII), Suman Thapa (XII), Nitu Swargiary (XI), Amung Zimik (XI), Thanghmulian (XI), Vishal Sunar (IX), Kamkhoson Gangte (XI), N Lalpual Gangte (XI), David Neihsiel (XI), Long Khon Khual (XI), Rajen Rana (X),Rajen Pun (XII) and Avshe Majkoti (XII).

The coach was Jiten Bhaglari and N Khadangba was the Physical Education teacher.
