TURA: As many as 300 senior members of the erstwhile NCP party who transformed themselves into the PA Sangma-led NPP have walked away to join the Congress in support of former Chief Minister Salseng C Marak at Resubelpara constituency on Friday morning.
The Congress in Resubelpara led by Salseng C Marak organised a grand welcome for the dissidents who enrolled themselves as primary members of the ruling party on the same day.
The NPP defectors were led by none other than sitting MLA Timothy D Shira’s former son-in-law and youth NCP leader Aldrin D Sangma and Bodo tribal leader Jagat Daimary.
According to Aldrin Sangma the decision to join the Congress was taken for stability and ‘development’ of the new North Garo Hills district.
“Resubelpara is a new district and there is much to do to bring development. Development can come if we have a stable government headed by a stable party and it is only the Congress which can provide that,” claimed Aldrin Sangma.
Former Chief Minister and the only other leader after founder Captain Williamson A Sangma to complete a full five-year term, Salseng C Marak, also spoke on the occasion encouraging the new entrants to the party to work dedicatedly for the development of the new district.
“Development is the key to upliftment of our young district and we all need to play an active role in that direction,” were the encouraging words given out by the former Chief Minister who is also the official party candidate for Resubelpara constituency for the 2013 elections.
