SHILLONG: Leader of Opposition Conrad K Sangma has urged the State Government to appoint all those candidates who are in the merit list declared by the East Khasi Hills District Selection Committee for appointment to the various posts under Grade IV.

“All these candidates deserve to be appointed since they have worked very hard to get this job. The Government would do injustice to the hundreds of the candidates who have anticipated for the past many months to get an appointment,” Sangma said during a zero hour notice in the Assembly on Friday.

According to Leader of Opposition, the candidates had filed RTIs in various Government departments and found out there are 169 posts which are vacant.

“The Government should appoint the DSC candidates who are in the merit list to the various posts which are lying vacant,” he said.

Out of the 331 qualified candidates in the merit list, Sangma said only 122 candidates have got the appointment while also informing that there are another 209 candidates who are yet to get an appointment.

While referring to the Supreme Court ruling on January 27 this year, Leader of Opposition said that the ruling of the apex court is not applicable to these DSC candidates since they had not mentioned the number of vacancies when the advertisement was called for recruitment to these various posts.

According to Sangma, the case of these DSC candidates is similar to the fate of the MCS and LP school teachers who were waiting for the appointment.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said that the Government cannot extent the period of the merit list of the qualified candidates who are eligible for appointment to the various posts under Grade IV on account of the ruling of the Supreme Court.

According to Chief Minister, the apex court had clearly stated that the Government cannot recommend for appointments beyond the number of posts which have been advertised.

“We cannot go against the ruling of the apex court since it would be a violation of Article 16 and 18 of the Constitution,” Chief Minister said.
