NONGSTOIN: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Nongstoin Circle on Wednesday met the Principal of Nongstoin College following complaints by students and parents that the scholarships for the students had not been given to them since 2010.

BK Laitphlang, Principal of the College, informed that the delay in the release of the students’ scholarships was because many students who have applied for the scholarships had not yet collected their earlier scholarships. He clarified that unless the total amount released by the Government for the scholarships had been handed over to the students, new scholarship amount is not released.

Laitphlang informed the students’ body that most of the colleges of Meghalaya were facing the same problem, adding that they had earlier met Education Minister Prof RC Laloo with regards to the matter. Accordingly, they have implemented a new policy where every student was required to open a bank account where the scholarship amount would be deposited directly by the concerned department.

He also informed the KSU members that in September this year, the Utilization Certificate (UC) had been passed on to the Government by him.

Laitphlang also assured the students’ body that the scholarships would be released positively by the end of January.
