Robotic surgery in Tripura shortly

 Agartala: The state government has decided to introduce Robotic surgery in GBP hospital in collaboration with the International Society of Robotic Surgery (ISRS) said Health Minister Tapan Chakraborty.

On the robotic surgery, the minister on Thursday said it is a type minimally invasive surgery, means that instead of operating on patients through large incisions miniaturized surgical instruments that fit through a series of quarter – inch incisions.

Utilizing this advanced technology surgeons are able to perform a growing number of complex urological, gynecological, cardiothoracic and general surgical procedures. Since these procedures can now be performed through very small incisions, patients experience a number of benefits compared to open surgery like less trauma on the body, minimal scarring and faster recovery time.

Initially, the surgeons of the ISRS will be in-charge of the robotic surgery unit at GBP Hospital, state’s premiere hospital. The project cost of the unit will be around Rs. 6 crore.

Chakraborty said the government is on the move to introduce generic medicines in the government-run hospitals. “The director of health service had prepared standard treatment protocol and essential drug list (EDL) for the public health clinics considering union health ministry’s list of medicines”, he said.

Chakraborty stated “After consulting specialist in all medical disciplines and we are sincerely trying to ensure that entire EDL is made available to the hospitals”

Sources of health department, however, said that the government was pursuing to procure EDL from central government run medicine manufacturing public sector undertakings but a few commonly used ones, administered on region and climate specific diseases might not be available in generic form.

However, the state is also considering setting up a parallel medical vigilance wing with experts from all fields to monitor the prescription to prevent doctors from prescribing medicine in brand names avoiding generic form, officials added.
