Rapist facing death award enjoying life

Darbhanga: When the entire nation is crying hoarse over the Delhi gang rape incident and demanding the rapists’ death sentence, in Bihar Md Mannan alias Abdul Mannan, awarded with capital punishment for raping and subsequently killing a minor girl, is enjoying his life in want of execution of the punishment.

The incident took place on February 18,2004, at Kathra village under Manigachi police station in the district when Md Mannan who was working as skilled labour at the house of one Mahesh Jha brutally raped Kalyani, his seven year old daughter. After committing the horrifying incident Md Mannan killed Kalyani and threw her body in a sugarcane field. The mutilated body of was found from the field the very next day. An FIR was lodged at Manigachi police station by the uncle of the deceased following which Md Mannan was arrested.

During the hearing, Md Mannan had admitted before the fast track court judge Rudra Pratap Singh of committing rape upon five minor girls on earlier occasions apart from Kalayani. The judge had awarded death sentence to Md Mannan on May 29, 2007.

Md Mannan had challenged the verdict of the fast track court in Patna High Court which upheld the judgement of the fast track court on August 19, 2008.

The Supreme court describing the crime as rarest of the rare one too upheld the judgement of the Patna high court and Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad on April 20, 2011 directed to execute Md Mannan as early as possible. Even after passage of 20 months of the apex court’s verdict the convict was still to be hanged. (UNI)
