SHILLONG: The State police have denied the allegation of forcing confessions made by the family members of the two youths arrested for impersonating as SOT personnel.
The family members of the two accused- Danny Dkhar and Robert Kharsati have urged the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to initiate action against the police personnel for alleged torture in order to force confession of the crime.
“The allegation made by the family members (against the police) is totally baseless. The two accused not only impersonated themselves as SOT personnel but even abducted a tourist taxi driver,” Additional SP (Crime) Vivek Syiem said here on Monday.
“Tourist taxi driver Pynshai Rymbai from Saw Lad near Madanriting was kidnapped at gun point on December 8 while he was coming from Jaintia Hills to meet his relatives at Nazareth Hospital,” Syiem said adding that it was during the course of interrogation relating to this case that the duo confessed to having posed as SOT personnel.
The Additional SP (Crime) also informed that the police seized a toy gun and drugs from their possession. “These evidences against the two accused are enough to prove their involvement in various criminal activities,” he said.
“We would reply to the NHRC if they seek any queries on the allegations made by the family members of the accused,” he added. Earlier, the two accused had robbed one person of his mobile phone and other belongings at Dhankheti on November 22 and forced the victim to withdraw money from his account from the ATM at Bawri Mansion. “As there was no money in the ATM, the duo took the victim to the ATM located at Malki and managed to withdraw Rs 500 from his account,” Syiem had said.
