Kite festival enthrals Shillongites

SHILLONG: The Shillong skyline came alive amidst streaks of colorful glory with young children flying their kites to celebrate the first ever Lasubon Kites Flying Festival at Shillong Golf Course here on Saturday.

The major attraction of the event organised by the Tourism department was the Mumbai based Golden Kite Club, showcasing their train kites – 100 and above kites flying on the same string.

The Mumbai based club which participates in kite festivals all across the globe has been invited by the Tourism department to participate in the event.

“The Indian flag looks beautiful on a kite and we use this image often on our train kites. Besides this, we have eagle, bat and owl kites also soaring on 110 feet train kites,” Golden Kite Club member Abdul Rauf told The Shillong Times on the sideline of the festival.

According to Rauf, it takes two months time to create a 110 feet train kite. “It requires huge effort and labour to create such kites,” he said.

When asked about the price of this train kites in the market, Rauf said that this kind of kites is not available for sale.

The Golden Kite Club member said that the members of the club have participated in various festivals in countries like Europe and others.

“We also participated in various other festivals in the country. The biggest kites’ festival in India is in Ahmedabad,” Rauf said.

“We would love to come back next year,” he added.

Meanwhile, a tourist from New Zealand, Ron Poul said that it is really great to see a beautiful place like Shillong holding this kind of festival.

With the success of the first edition of the Kite Festival, the government is contemplating to invite more participants and make it a bigger event in the next edition of the kite festival.
