SHILLONG: Despite being denied a Congress ticket, Umroi legislator SW Rymbai is set to contest the upcoming Assembly election in the State in February-March.

“I am going to contest the upcoming elections as I have the support of the people,” Rymbai told The Shillong Times adding that Umroi will witness a contest between money power and people’s power.

Earlier, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in candidates’ names declared on Sunday, left out the Umroi legislator from the list.

When asked whether he will approach any other party for ticket, he said, “I have not yet decided and will call for a meeting of my supporters to discuss whether I should contest as an independent candidate or from any other party”.

When asked for his reaction of not being allotted with a Congress ticket despite being a sitting legislator, he said that it is the decision of the party’s high command.

It may be mentioned that the legislator was named in the controversial land deal related to the Mawpalai plantations in Ri-Bhoi district where he had claimed of having the power of attorney of the villagers in initiating the deal.

The legislator was also asked to reimburse Rs 8 crore out of the total Rs 10 crore which was earlier paid by the Forest and Environment department for the land deal.
