JOWAI: KSU members from Jaintia Hills district apprehended around 200 labourers from the Star Cement company premises at Lumshnong following a surprise raid carried out to check the work permits of the labourers on Saturday.
The KSU members led by general secretary, Streamly S Niangti later handed over the Star Cement workers to the police at Lumshnong anti-dacoity camp even as company officials termed the move on part of the NGO as illegal.
“This is completely illegal, they should atleast inform us, we are always cooperating with the NGOs. Had they informed, we could at least have made them understand that work permit have not yet been formulated in the newly created East Jaintia hills District”, a senior official of the cement plant said.
The Cement plant officials claimed that their labourers have been registered with the labour department and labour license has been obtained by the concerned contractors.
“We the Star Cement have always strictly followed the guidelines and agreements made by the state government or agreed upon by the local Dorbar Shnong and Elaka. Despite this we are always under target form several NGOs”, said one of the senior officials adding that such activities should be dealt with properly.
According to sources, the KSU had informed the Labour Inspector and East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner before carrying out the raid.
