JOWAI: Just days after the alleged direct appointment of 19 candidates were detected in the office of the Sub-Divisional Officer, Soil and Water Conservation Department, Jowai, a fresh case of two direct appointments in the District Industries Centre (DIC) came to light on Thursday.

Sources alleged that the two persons were recently appointed in the DIC and their appointment letters were issued on December.

NGOs in Jaintia Hills have strongly condemned such illegal appointments in various government departments in the district.

“We strongly condemn the illegal appointments in the Soil and Water Conservation department and also in the District Industries Centre,” JSU general secretary Emperor Bareh said after a meeting with DIC General Manager, Shape Pasweth, on Thursday.

“We demand that all illegal appointees should be removed immediately and the list of vacancies should be sent to the District Selection Committee so that proper appointments can be made,” Bareh added.

Earlier, the Meghalaya United People’s Front (MUPF) has also condemned the direct appointments and had demanded that all the appointees should be terminated immediately.

“What has been made to understand is that these illegal appointments were made based on the recommendation of the Jowai MLA. We don’t want to say anything against Dr RC Laloo but what we want is fair and square appointment,” said an educated unemployed youth.

Attempts to contact DIC General Manager S Pasweth on Thursday failed as his mobile was switched-off.
