Guwahati: As part of special security measures undertaken in the run up to the celebrations of Republic Day, the administration has directed all the landlords and house owners in burgeoning Guwahati city to submit detail information about tenants residing in their property to the local police station at the earliest.

The administration has warned that non-compliance of the directive will invite stern actions against landlord/house owners.

Similar directives issued by the administration earlier failed to elicit response from landlords at the desired level.

A senior police officials informed that the ever increasing floating population in Guwahati city served to the advantage of militants and other anti-socials unless there is proper monitoring of residents living in rented houses and flats in the city.

Several hideouts and communication centres of various militant outfits including some from Manipur were busted by city police in many rented houses in the past.

There were instances where militants were running extortion operations in the city from such bases taking advantage of lack of proper monitoring by security agencies.

Though Assam police have been successful in making it mandatory for, hotels, registered lodged and guest houses in the city to submit the list of guests/inmates everyday to the local police station, mushrooming private hostels in every nook and corner of the city have remained a cause for concern.

Meanwhile, police and security forces have mounted vigil on all the vital installations, important public places like railway stations, bus stops and markets to thwart designs, if any, of militants to carry out subversion around Republic Day.

Security personnel have been posted for round the clock vigil in public grounds all over the State including the Central celebration ground in Guwahati, where official functions of Republic Day would be held.

Security forces have intensified operations in eastern Assam districts of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia bordering Arunachal Pradesh against the anti-talks faction of United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) given that the outfit has a strong base in the area.
