Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party on Friday announced a list of 13 candidates for the Meghalaya Assembly polls on February 23.

“Our party has announced 13 candidates for Meghalaya Assembly polls after a delegation of former legislators and ministers met party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav here and joined the party,” a statement released by SP here said.

Among the leaders who met Yadav here included three-time legislator and former minister Brening A Sangma, who would be contesting from Dalu, sitting legislator and former minister Augustine D Marak (Raksamgre), and former Minister Manirul Islam Sarkar (Phulbari).

Yadav said that the new inclusions would strengthen the party and would also achieve its mandate to have the party’s presence in Meghalaya by 2014.

Former legislator Nidhuram Hajong (Mahendraganj) and sitting legislator Samuel A Sangma (Baghmara) will also contest on SP tickets. The names of others are yet to be released.

More candidates are likely to be named soon, party spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said. (Agencies)
