SHILLONG: UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh has indicated the State will have a non-Congress Government after February 23 election.

“The wave across the State is very much against Congress. UDP will emerge as the single largest party,” Lyngdoh said after filing his nomination for Shillong West constituency here on Tuesday.

According to him, UDP would be ready to work with all the likeminded parties except Congress.

When pointed to the Dr Donkupar Roy-led MPA government, a non-Congress government which survived for a year, he said the trend this time was totally different.

“In 2008, all the political parties came together only after election to prevent Congress from forming a government. This time we already have some kind of pre-poll ‘understanding’,” Lyngdoh said.

It may be recalled that after 2008 assembly elections, Congress could not form the government despite winning 25 seats and subsequently parties like UDP, NCP, HSPDP, KHNAM, BJP and Independent MLAs formed Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA).

The MPA, which was formed on March 19 2008, collapsed on March 19, 2009, after Paul Lyngdoh, who was then with KHNAM, along with some Independent MLAs switched their allegiance to Congress and withdrew support from the MPA government.

The UDP leader who is confident of his victory said this time he expected to perform better.

Congress has fielded prominent businessman Mohindro Rapsang from Shillong West.

Stating that his contest in this election is not against any individual, he said “I am contesting against a group of industries”.
