SHILLONG/ Jowai: Jowai Police along with the flying squad on Friday seized an amount of Rs 30 lakh in two separate cases during vehicle checking at Lad Nangbah near Phramer, West Jaintia Hills and on the Khliehriat-Jowai Road respectively.

West Jaintia Hills SP Herbert Lyngdoh informed that in the first case an amount of Rs 5 lakh was seized on Friday afternoon from one Maruti Car (ML 04 A 2804) which was being driven by Dapynhunshisha Suchiang and was hired by Subhash Prajapat, the manager of Shangpung Service Station. The seizure was made while the vehicle was on its way from Shangpung to Jowai. The police party immediately informed the flying squad who arrived on the spot and seized the cash. However, none of the three occupants of the vehicle was arrested.

The petrol pump manager, Prajapat claimed that the cash was meant for purchase of petrol. “I left the petrol pump at 3pm to deposit the amount in a Bank in Jowai for placing a new order for petrol but when we reaching Lad-Nangbah at around 3:20 pm police stopped the vehicle and on checking they recovered the cash. The cash was seized in front of a magistrate.”

In the second case, around Rs 24.84 lakh was seized from a vehicle (ML 04 A 6984) which was being driven by Dajan Dkhar. The vehicle was coming from Khliehriat to Jowai.

Sources informed that the police and the flying squad had also seized a Congress flag from the vehicle.

Police, however, informed that they have not yet been able to ascertain any further details since the seizure was made very late in the evening.

Chief Electoral Officer P Naik informed that there are indications that one of the vehicles was carrying a Congress flag and further investigation was on to establish whether the money belonged to the political party.

Assistant District Election Officer SS Syiemlieh informed that investigation is on to ascertain the source and end use of the cash.
